Donovaly

<p>Donovaly sits on a high mountain pass rather than in a valley, which gives it wide, open terrain that suits beginners and families far more comfortably than the steeper resorts elsewhere in the Low and West Tatras.</p>
<p>It has become one of Slovakia's most visited winter destinations for exactly that reason, along with its position roughly midway between Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok, making it an easy stop for visitors already exploring central Slovakia.</p>

<p>The pass has been a route between the Váh and Hron river valleys for centuries, and the village grew as a waypoint before developing into a dedicated ski and summer tourism destination through the 1990s and 2000s, with a large hotel and chalet base built up around the original mountain settlement.</p>

<p>The pistes are shorter and gentler than at Jasná or Vrátna, which is precisely the appeal for first-time skiers, young families and cross-country skiers who prefer the marked trails looping through the surrounding forest.</p>
<p>The Bison Ranch (Bison Ranč) just outside the village keeps a small herd of European bison in a large enclosure, and combines a working ranch feel with a restaurant, making it a common half-day stop even for visitors not skiing at all.</p>
