The Clock Tower is the most recognisable vertical landmark on SNP Square. Construction began in 1552, and the original Renaissance tower was later extended in Baroque form. Today visitors can climb to its walkway for broad views over the historic centre, Town Castle and the mountain ranges surrounding Banská Bystrica.

History and context

A place shaped across centuries

The tower began as a Renaissance structure reaching the height of the present 20.5-metre walkway. It was extended in Baroque style at the end of the 17th century and received its present appearance after reconstruction following the destructive fire of 1761. It served as a municipal clock tower, watch post, alarm point and short-term prison, while a city trumpeter announced hours and emergencies. Structural problems eventually left it leaning 68 centimetres from vertical. Stabilisation work completed in 1959 stopped further movement.

The visit centres on the ascent of 117 wooden steps to the exterior walkway. From there, the view extends across SNP Square, Kapitulská Street, Town Castle and the surrounding Veľká Fatra, Low Tatras, Kremnické and Starohorské mountain ranges. The climb is entirely stair-based, and access is suspended during bad weather.

The tower is closed during bad weather.

Choose clear, dry weather for the best views. Summer and early September provide the longest opening hours, while access is suspended during bad weather.

Getting there

The tower stands at Námestie SNP 24 in the pedestrian historic centre. It is directly accessible from the square and is a short walk from Town Castle, the town hall and the principal city-centre public-transport stops.

The viewing walkway is accessible only by climbing 117 wooden steps and is not step-free. The tower exterior and SNP Square can be viewed at ground level.
