Pustý hrad (Old Castle)
A vast hilltop ruin above Zvolen, one of the largest medieval castle complexes in Central Europe and comparable in scale to Spiš Castle.
Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia
A historic central Slovak royal town defined by a Gothic castle, the extensive Pustý hrad complex and its strategic position at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers.
Zvolen developed at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, where favourable terrain and long-distance routes encouraged settlement from prehistoric times. The medieval community gained important commercial and administrative functions, and King Béla IV renewed its royal privileges in 1243 after the Mongol invasion.
The city’s earliest royal centre stood above the valley at the site now known as Pustý hrad. Its Upper and Lower Castles form an extensive fortified and archaeological landscape. Research has documented prehistoric settlement, medieval administration, royal residence and the gradual transformation of the complex before its decline during the conflicts of the fifteenth century.
A younger royal residence was built beside the town during the reign of Louis I in the fourteenth century. Zvolen Castle was conceived as a Gothic residence influenced by Italian urban palaces. Later fortification, Renaissance alteration and Baroque rebuilding changed its appearance as its role shifted from royal residence to defensive stronghold.
