Žilina developed at the confluence of the Kysuca and Váh rivers into one of northern Slovakia's key regional centres. Mariánske námestie, the town's main square, retains its medieval arcaded burgher houses, while the Church of the Holy Trinity, built around 1400, was elevated to cathedral status for the Diocese of Žilina in February 2008. A short bus ride north, Budatín Castle's 13th-century Romanesque keep houses the Považie Museum, whose standout exhibit is a collection of more than 5,000 decorative wire-craft ("drotár") items tracing the region's historic tinker trade.
The New Synagogue, built between 1928 and 1931 to a Bauhaus-influenced design by German modernist architect Peter Behrens, was restored between 2011 and 2017 and now operates as an arts centre, an unusual architectural landmark for a Slovak regional capital.
