Martin rose to prominence in the 19th century as the foremost centre of Slovak cultural and national life, hosting the founding of Matica slovenská in 1863 and later the establishment of the Slovak National Museum's first branch in 1893. In recognition of this legacy, Slovakia's National Council formally declared Martin the centre of national culture of the Slovaks on 24 August 1994.
The town centre spreads around Námestie S. H. Vajanského, within walking distance of the Matica slovenská building and the Ethnographic Museum, the oldest and largest branch of the Slovak National Museum, with a collection of more than 100,000 folk-culture items. A short drive away, the open-air Museum of the Slovak Village recreates rural Turiec life from the 19th and 20th centuries, and Martin's position at the foot of the Malá Fatra makes it a natural base for hiking into the Vrátna valley.

May to September suits both the museum visits and any hiking extension into the Malá Fatra. The open-air Museum of the Slovak Village keeps shorter hours outside the May to October season.
The town centre and Ethnographic Museum are walkable from the train and bus stations. The open-air Museum of the Slovak Village lies a short drive or bus ride from the centre, in the Jahodnícke háje area. Martin connects by train to Bratislava in roughly 3 to 4 hours and by road to the Malá Fatra’s trailheads.
