A place shaped across centuries
Martin rose to prominence in the 19th century as the foremost centre of Slovak cultural and national life, hosting the founding of Matica slovenská in 1863 and later the establishment of the Slovak National Museum's first branch in 1893. In recognition of this legacy, Slovakia's National Council formally declared Martin the centre of national culture of the Slovaks on 24 August 1994.
