A small Orava village beneath one of Slovakia’s most photographed castles, a rock-top fortress rising 112 metres above the Orava River.
Oravský Podzámok exists because of the castle above it: the village only became administratively independent from the castle estate in the second half of the 19th century, having spent centuries as a service settlement for the lords of Orava Castle. The castle itself is first documented from the mid-13th century, built on a limestone rock 112 metres above the Orava River as a border fortress guarding the trade route north into Poland.
Today the village is essentially a single-purpose gateway: a small cluster of houses, guesthouses and a car park sit directly below the castle, with the steep approach path climbing straight from the village centre to the fortress gate. The Orava Museum, which administers the castle, keeps historical, ethnographic and natural-history exhibitions inside its walls, and a small collection of historic carriages and sleighs is displayed in the village itself during the summer season.

Half a day
May to September gives the longest opening hours for the castle and the only season the carriage collection is generally open. Winter visits are possible but hours shorten considerably from November to February.
The village is tiny and entirely walkable, with the climb to the castle gate taking roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the car park. Oravský Podzámok sits just off the main road between Dolný Kubín and Trstená, with regional buses stopping in the village.
