Skiing beneath the Slovak Alps

A place shaped across centuries
<p>The valley was already a known hiking base before organised skiing arrived, thanks to the national park status Malá Fatra received in 1988 and its long-standing reputation among Slovak and Czech climbers. Lift infrastructure on Chleb has been modernised in stages since the 2000s, including a cable car replacing older drag lifts on the upper mountain.</p>
What to expect when you arrive
<p>The resort's runs are shorter than Jasná's but sit at a genuinely scenic elevation, with views toward the rock towers of Rozsutec and Steny on clear days. Beginners have dedicated slopes near the valley floor, while the cable car serves the more testing terrain higher up Chleb.</p>
<p>In summer the same cable car carries hikers up toward the ridge trails that link Chleb, Poludňový Grúň and the approach to Veľký Rozsutec, which is one of the most photographed peaks in Slovakia.</p>

Getting there
<p>Vrátna Valley is reached via the village of Terchová, about 25 minutes by car or local bus from Žilina, which has direct train connections across Slovakia. Buses run into the valley itself during the ski season; outside it, a car makes the trip considerably easier.</p>
