Spišské Podhradie was first mentioned in 1249 and grew up beneath Spiš Castle, whose hilltop position has watched over the town for nearly 900 years; construction on the castle dates to the start of the 12th century, with the oldest written reference from 1120. Covering more than 4 hectares, it ranks among the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, and both the fortress and the town beneath it were inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993 as part of 'Levoča, Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments.'
A short walk from the town centre, Spišská Kapitula preserves a completely different kind of heritage: a walled ecclesiastical settlement built around a single medieval street, documented in writing since 1235 and enclosed by walls raised between 1662 and 1665. It became seat of the Diocese of Spiš in 1776, and its Late Romanesque St. Martin's Cathedral, built between 1245 and 1275, remains the spiritual centre of the settlement today. Note that Spiš Castle itself stands just across the municipal boundary in the neighbouring village of Žehra, though it is universally reached from and marketed alongside Spišské Podhradie.

May to September gives the longest opening hours at Spiš Castle, which opens daily in peak summer months. Hours shorten considerably outside this window, and the castle can close entirely in the depths of winter.
Spišská Kapitula lies about 1km from the town centre and is an easy walk. Spiš Castle sits on a hilltop a short drive or a longer uphill walk from town; most visitors drive or take a taxi to the castle car park before walking the final approach.
