A place shaped across centuries
Spišská Kapitula has been documented in writing since 1235, becoming the main seat of church administration in the region during the 12th century. Walls enclosing the settlement were built between 1662 and 1665, and it became seat of the Diocese of Spiš in 1776. Its Late Romanesque St. Martin's Cathedral, built between 1245 and 1275, remains the spiritual centre of the settlement today, and shares the same 1993 UNESCO World Heritage listing as neighbouring Spiš Castle.
