Destination overview
A royal gold-mining town built around one of Europe’s great minting traditions
Kremnica developed in a valley rich in gold-bearing ores, where mining activity existed before the town received its defining royal privileges. On 17 November 1328, King Charles Robert of Anjou elevated the settlement to a free royal mining town and established a royal mint close to the mines and smelting works.
The mint began producing silver coins and high-value gold florins that later became known as Kremnica ducats. Their quality helped establish the town as an important monetary and administrative centre of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Kremnica also became the seat of the royal mining and minting chamber and played a leading role within the association of seven central Slovak mining towns.
The fortified Town Castle rises above Štefánik Square and forms the architectural focus of the historic centre. Its walls protect a group of medieval buildings dominated by the Church of Saint Catherine and its viewing tower. Below the castle, the elongated square is lined by burgher houses, the mint complex, the Baroque plague column and buildings connected with municipal, mining and commercial life.

Best time to visit
May to October is best for the castle tower, town walks and mountain excursions. Museums and the historic centre remain worthwhile throughout the year.
Getting around
The protected historic centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Kremnica has regional train and bus connections, although journey times should be checked in advance. A car is useful for surrounding mining sites and mountain routes.
