Central Slovakia’s largest region combines medieval mining towns, mountain plateaus, the Hron valley, forests and distinctive rural landscapes.
Banská Bystrica Region occupies the broad centre of Slovakia and contains some of the country’s richest mining heritage. Banská Bystrica, Banská Štiavnica and Kremnica developed around metals, trade and technical knowledge that connected central Slovakia with wider European networks.
The landscape is equally varied. The Hron links mountain settlements and historic towns, while the Low Tatras, Poľana, Muránska planina and the southern districts introduce forests, plateaus, caves and volcanic terrain.
Distances are greater than they first appear, so the region is best explored in sections. A journey might combine the mining towns, Horehronie and the Low Tatras, or focus on the southern castle routes and rural landscapes of Gemer and Novohrad.
