Pezinok was first mentioned in writing in 1208 as "terra Bozin" and grew from a medieval mining settlement into one of the richest towns in the Kingdom of Hungary during the 17th and 18th centuries, built on quality wine production in the Small Carpathian foothills. That wine heritage is preserved today at the Small Carpathian Museum of Wine Culture, housed in an authentic 17th-century burgher wine-making house and covering more than 60 years of regional viticultural history and culture.
Pezinok's other landmark, Pezinský zámok, began as a moated "water castle" built before 1271 with two drawbridges spanning the Cajlan brook, before falling into disuse in the 17th century. Ján Pálffy repaired it in 1718, and the influential Pálffy family rebuilt it into a Romantic-style residence in 1875, with Count Francis Pálffy adding the surrounding park in 1844; the chateau grounds function today as a winery and hospitality complex.
