Michalovce's modern identity is closely tied to a body of water that didn't exist before the 1960s. Construction of the Zemplínska šírava reservoir began in 1961, formed by damming the Laborec River primarily for flood control and irrigation, and the reservoir entered ceremonial operation on 12 August 1966 under its original name, Vihorlatská Sĺňava.
At roughly 33 square kilometres, with a maximum length of 11 kilometres, it is by far the largest body of water in eastern Slovakia, earning its popular nickname well before most visitors ever check a map. Recreation now dominates its western shore around towns like Hôrka and Kamenec, while its shallower eastern end has quietly become a protected habitat for close to a hundred waterfowl species.
