An engineering project that became "the Slovak sea"
Zemplínska šírava did not exist before 1961, when construction began on a reservoir intended primarily for flood control and irrigation along the Laborec River. By the time it entered ceremonial operation on 12 August 1966, under its original name Vihorlatská Sĺňava, it had already become clear the reservoir would serve recreation as much as its intended engineering purpose.
At roughly 33 square kilometres — 11 kilometres long and up to 3.5 kilometres wide — it dwarfs every other body of water in eastern Slovakia, which is precisely why locals settled on calling it simply "the Slovak sea."

A place shaped across centuries
Construction on what would become Zemplínska šírava began in 1961, damming the Laborec River primarily to manage flooding and supply irrigation water to the surrounding Zemplín region. The reservoir entered trial operation in November 1965, and its formal, ceremonial opening followed on 12 August 1966, at which point it was still known by its original name, Vihorlatská Sĺňava.
The scale of the resulting lake — some 33 square kilometres of surface area — was large enough that recreational use developed alongside its intended flood-control and irrigation functions almost immediately, and the reservoir has been a fixture of eastern Slovak summer life ever since.

What to expect when you arrive
Most visitor activity concentrates on the western shore, around established recreation centres including Hôrka, Kaluža, Paľkov and Kamenec, each offering a slightly different pace and level of development. The lake's size means there is genuine room to find a quieter stretch of shoreline even during busy summer weekends.
The shallower eastern section tells a different story: designated a protected ornithological reserve, it hosts close to 100 recorded waterfowl species, some of them genuinely rare, making the lake as interesting for birdwatchers as it is for swimmers on the opposite shore.
