Destination overview

Gothic Košice, karst landscapes, Tokaj wine and the cultural routes of eastern Slovakia

Košice Region stretches across south-eastern Slovakia from the metropolis of Košice to the Hungarian and Ukrainian borderlands. Košice provides the region’s cultural centre, with a large protected historic core built around St Elisabeth Cathedral and Hlavná Street.

Beyond the city, the region changes repeatedly. Slovak Karst introduces caves and limestone plateaus, Slovak Paradise offers ravines and waterfalls, and the Spiš area contains major medieval monuments. To the south-east, Tokaj vineyards and the broad landscapes of Zemplín reveal a warmer, more agricultural character.

The region works best as a sequence of distinct landscapes rather than a single base. Košice can anchor the journey, followed by separate routes toward Spiš, the karst, Slovak Paradise or Tokaj.

Recommended duration

5–8 days

Best time to visit

May to October suits cities, caves, vineyards and hiking. Autumn is particularly strong in Tokaj, while Košice remains a year-round cultural destination.

Getting around

Košice is the regional rail, bus and air hub. Trains serve Spiš and several larger towns, but a car is useful for karst sites, Tokaj villages and dispersed rural attractions.
