History and context

A place shaped across centuries

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the second half of the 14th century on Radničné námestie, Spišská Nová Ves's main square. Its original tower was destroyed by artillery fire in 1849 and rebuilt in 1893–1894 to designs by architect Imrich Steindl, reaching 87 metres with seven clock faces, a height officially recorded as the tallest church tower in Slovakia since 2008. The church's southern portal relief, depicting the Crowning of Mary, ranks among the oldest sculptures in Slovakia, and Renaissance frescoes were uncovered during restoration between 1954 and 1958.
