Zádiel Gorge

<p>Zádielska tesnina is one of the narrowest and deepest gorges in the Slovak Karst, cut by a small stream between limestone walls that in places rise almost 300 metres on either side, close enough that direct sunlight barely reaches the gorge floor in winter.</p>
<p>That lack of sun is exactly what makes it a cold-season destination: meltwater and seepage down the rock faces freeze into columns and curtains of ice that can persist long after the surrounding countryside has thawed.</p>

<p>The gorge sits within the Slovak Karst, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site jointly with the Aggtelek Karst across the border in Hungary for its concentration of cave systems, and was declared a national nature reserve in its own right for the rare plant communities that survive in its unusually cool, shaded microclimate.</p>

<p>A marked trail follows the gorge floor along the stream, passing beneath overhanging rock and past the seasonal ice formations, which are largest and most reliable from January into March depending on the winter's severity.</p>
<p>The trail is not technically difficult but requires sturdy footwear, since the path can be genuinely icy underfoot in the same conditions that produce the ice formations on the walls; crampons or trekking poles are worth carrying in deep winter.</p>
