Regional towns run smaller-scale markets that trade some of the scale of Bratislava's for a quieter, more local atmosphere — worth seeking out if you're staying in a smaller base like Banská Bystrica or Kremnica over the season.

Markets typically run from late November through the days before Christmas, with the atmosphere building noticeably in the second half of December. Weekday evenings tend to be quieter than weekends if you'd rather avoid the busiest crowds.
