History and context

A place shaped across centuries

Salt production at Solivar dates back centuries, with the surviving technical complex built up from the 17th century onward to pump brine from underground wells and boil it down into salt in large pans. The site is recognised as one of Slovakia's most important technical monuments and has operated as a museum, part of the Slovak Technical Museum in Košice, since 2001.

What to expect when you arrive

The museum tour covers the wooden pumping mechanisms (gápele) once used to draw brine to the surface, the salt-boiling houses, and warehouse buildings, explaining how the works turned underground brine into a commercial product that once helped fund Prešov's wealth. Displays cover the engineering behind the wells and pumps alongside the daily working life of the salt-works.
