History and context
A place shaped across centuries
Prešov grew rich between the 15th and 17th centuries on opal and salt mining, wine trading and a well-known bobbin lace industry, wealth still visible in the stuccoed facades lining Hlavná ulica today. The town's position in eastern Slovakia, close to the historic Rusyn and Orthodox communities of the Šariš region, left it with a religious landscape unusual for a Slovak town: a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral, a Baroque Greek Catholic cathedral, and a Neoclassical Orthodox cathedral all stand within walking distance of one another.

Most sightseeing runs along Hlavná ulica, a long pedestrian street that splits into two parallel arms lined with historic townhouses, cafés and shops. The Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Baroque Cathedral of St. John the Baptist anchor the street, while the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky sits on a quieter side street nearby. The Rákocziho Palace houses the Krajské múzeum (County Museum), covering the region’s history through historic weapons, furniture and natural history displays.

Best time to visit
May to June and September to October bring mild weather for walking the street without summer crowds. A Christmas market runs on the square in winter.

Hlavná ulica is a short walk from Prešov's train and bus stations, both on the eastern edge of the historic centre. Traffic is restricted along most of the street, making the area easy and safe to explore on foot.
