Lomnický štít Cable Car

A two-stage cable car climbing to 2,634 metres, the second-highest point in Slovakia reachable without climbing gear, with a winter panorama over the High Tatras above the cloud line.

About this place

Above the clouds in the High Tatras

The cable car from Tatranská Lomnica to Lomnický štít is one of the few ways to reach a genuine high-alpine summit in Slovakia without technical climbing, rising in two stages via the mid-station at Skalnaté pleso to the summit station at 2,634 metres.

In winter, clear days above the temperature inversion layer common in the valleys below can mean sunshine and long views at the summit while Poprad and Tatranská Lomnica sit under grey cloud, which is part of why the trip is popular even for visitors not planning to ski.

History and context

A place shaped across centuries

The original cableway to Lomnický štít opened in 1940, among the first cable cars of its kind in Europe reaching such an altitude, and has been rebuilt and modernised several times since, most recently with new cabins improving capacity for the mid-station at Skalnaté pleso.

Visitor experience

What to expect when you arrive

Skalnaté pleso, the mid-station at a small mountain tarn, has its own observation terrace and is where most skiers disembark for the resort's pistes; the continuation to the summit is a separate, smaller cabin with limited capacity and is often booked in timed slots during busy periods.

At the summit, a narrow platform circles an astronomical observatory, with views that on a clear winter day extend into Poland across the border ridge and down the full length of the Tatras.
