History and context
A place shaped across centuries
The castle, first documented in 1341 and built shortly after 1314 by Zvolen county administrator Donč, guarded the medieval Via Magna trade route as one of the few Slovak examples of a moated 'water castle.' The Balaša family carried out renovations between 1574 and 1579, and around 1600–1603 Magdaléna Zaiová added an adjoining Renaissance manor, commemorated in the name of the street the site stands on today. A fire in 1803 left most of the complex in ruins for nearly two centuries.

What to expect when you arrive
The surviving manor wing was restored and reopened in 2001 as a private heritage site combining hotel and museum functions, with reconstructed exhibition sections added in 2012. Guided tours cover the site's Gothic and Renaissance building phases and its role guarding a key medieval trade route.

July and August: daily guided tours, roughly hourly, 10:00–16:00. September–October, May–June and November–April: weekends and public holidays only, tours at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Tours run about 55 minutes; groups of 10 or more can arrange visits with a day's notice.
