Jasná Ski Resort

Slovakia's largest ski resort, spread across the northern and southern slopes of Chopok in the Low Tatras, with terrain for complete beginners and gondola-served off-piste for experienced skiers.

About this place

Two mountains, one lift ticket

Jasná is the resort most Slovaks mean when they say they are "going skiing" — a network of lifts and pistes covering both sides of Chopok mountain, linked by a tunnel near the summit so skiers can move between the sunnier northern slopes and the steeper southern ones without removing their skis.

The resort has grown considerably over the past decade, with modern gondola cabins, snowmaking covering most pistes, and a season that reliably runs from December into early April at the higher altitudes.

History and context

A place shaped across centuries

Skiing at Chopok dates back to the 1970s, but Jasná only became a single connected resort after a tunnel was bored through the ridge in 2014, joining what had been two separately operated ski areas. Since then it has been the site of Slovakia's largest resort investment, including a new eight-seat gondola and expanded snowmaking.

What to expect when you arrive

The north side above Demänovská Dolina has the resort's longest and most technical runs, dropping over 800 vertical metres from the Chopok summit station. The south side, reached through the connecting tunnel, is gentler and catches more sun, which makes it the better choice on cold, overcast days.

Off the slopes, Demänovská Dolina has a cluster of hotels, mountain huts and thermal pools at the valley's base, so it is entirely possible to ski for a few hours and spend the rest of the day somewhere warm.

Getting there

Jasná sits in Demänovská Dolina, about 15 minutes by car or resort shuttle bus from Liptovský Mikuláš, which has direct train connections from Bratislava and Žilina. There is no train station in the valley itself, so a car, taxi or the seasonal ski bus from Liptovský Mikuláš is the practical option.
