A historic spa town in a narrow Carpathian valley, home to one of Europe's most unusual bathhouses — a Moorish-style Hammam with no direct architectural parallel on the continent.
Trenčianske Teplice's mineral springs have drawn visitors for centuries, but its most remarkable building owes its existence to one woman's fascination with a world's fair exhibit. Having seen a model of a luxurious Turkish bath at the Paris World Exhibition, the spa's owner travelled to Egypt, secured permission from the Viceroy, and brought back his own court architect to design a Hammam for the town.
Completed in 1888, the resulting bathhouse — lit through three domes so that the hall seems to glow like a starry sky — had no equivalent anywhere else in Europe at the time. It remains in use today, a genuinely unusual centrepiece for a spa town that could otherwise be mistaken for any other in the region.
