Five days is the itinerary length we recommend most often to first-time visitors, because it's long enough to include contrast — capital city, historic small town, mountains — without turning into a race between train stations.
Days 1–2: Bratislava
Start in the capital. Two days is enough for Bratislava's Old Town, Bratislava Castle, and a half-day trip to Devín Castle on the edge of the city — the exact route in our Bratislava Castles and the Danube in One Day itinerary, spread comfortably across your first two days rather than rushed into one.
Day 3: travel day to Banská Štiavnica
Move to Banská Štiavnica, a UNESCO-listed former silver-mining town built into a volcanic caldera. The journey takes around three hours; treat the rest of the day as arrival and a first wander through the old town.
Day 4: Banská Štiavnica in depth
Spend a full day here. The Old Castle and the Calvary above the town are the two anchor sights, but the real pleasure is simply walking the steep, quiet streets — see our Banská Štiavnica Heritage Weekend itinerary for a fuller breakdown.
Day 5: the High Tatras (or head home)
If your schedule allows a sixth day, add a short trip toward the High Tatras for a different kind of scenery entirely. If five days is your hard limit, Banská Štiavnica is a satisfying place to end a trip — it's compact enough that a relaxed final morning before departure never feels wasted.
Why this order works
This route moves from busiest to quietest, which tends to suit first-time visitors better than the reverse — you adjust to the pace of the country gradually rather than diving straight into mountain silence after a capital city.
