A failed oil search that struck exceptional thermal water instead
Podhájska's thermal pools exist because of a disappointment: exploratory drilling here in the 1960s was searching for oil and came up empty. What it did find was geothermal water, later confirmed in 1973 by a dedicated well reaching nearly 1,900 metres down.
That water — a sodium-chloride type found in few other locations — now supplies ten pools cooled from its natural temperature of over 80°C to a comfortable soaking range, drawing visitors from across Slovakia to what remains, at heart, a small village.

A place shaped across centuries
Drilling in Podhájska during the 1960s set out to find oil and failed. The geothermal water the wells encountered instead went largely unexploited until a purpose-drilled well, Podhájska-1, reached almost 1,900 metres in 1973, tapping a reservoir with a yield of 45–53 litres per second at around 81°C.
The resulting mineral water — high in dissolved solids and distinctive in its sodium-chloride composition — has been used for the spa ever since, and a reinjection well added in 1986 makes Podhájska the only geothermal site in Slovakia with a fully functioning reinjection system, returning used water underground rather than discharging it.
