History and context
A place shaped across centuries
The site's earliest documented reference comes from the 1113 Zobor Charter, one of the oldest surviving Hungarian-era documents. From 1720, the Erdődy family, who held the estate until 1945, transformed the medieval castle into a Baroque-Classicist noble residence and laid out an extensive French-terraced park. Among their additions, an Empire-style theatre built in 1802 ranks among the oldest preserved aristocratic theatres in Central Europe and the oldest surviving theatre in Slovakia.
